A Brotherhood
Rooted in Heidelberg

Our mother lodge, Ruprecht zu den Fünf Rosen, was instituted on 16 November 1856 — the traditions of which are carried proudly by Alt Heidelberg - Fidelitas Lodge No. 821 to this day. We are a constituted lodge of the American Canadian Grand Lodge within the United Grand Lodges of Germany.

Through two world wars, the suppression of Freemasonry under NSDP, and the rebuilding of German civil society, our brethren have maintained the enduring bonds of the Craft. We are privileged to meet in Heidelberg since 1955.

Membership is open to men of good character who believe in a Supreme Being, who desire to make themselves better men and thereby improve their communities.

What is
Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation dedicated to making good men better. It teaches personal improvement through study, ritual, and the practice of virtue. It has no theology, makes no political affiliations, and is open to men of all races, religions, and backgrounds.

There are approximately 6 million Freemasons worldwide. In Germany, around 15,500 brethren are organised under the United Grand Lodges of Germany.

I
A fraternity, not a religion
Freemasonry respects the beliefs of all its members and teaches no method of salvation. It requires only belief in a Supreme Being.
II
Open, not secretive
Our meetings are announced publicly, buildings are clearly marked, and members proudly wear identifying jewellery. Only ceremonial passwords remain private.
III
United in service
Masonic charitable work spans hospitals, educational scholarships, disaster relief, and community support — open to all citizens, not only members.
IV
Learning in degrees
Masons progress through degrees of insight — from basic principles to more complex moral and philosophical lessons — at their own pace.
